Asian Games 2026: India win gold medal in Women's Compound Archery against China

The Indian women’s compound archery trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, and Prithika Pradeep clinched a historic gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan on Wednesday, defeating China 238-234 in a thrilling final.

With superb precision, the Indian archers maintained their lead from the opening round and famously equalled South Korea’s world record score of 238 set back in 2014.

The victory brought India its seventh gold of the Games, pushing the overall medal tally to 53. While the triumph added Jyothi’s fourth Asian Games gold to her illustrious career, it marked a dream debut Asian Games gold for both Chikitha and Prithika.

India dominated from the off by opening with three consecutive 10s against China’s 27-point start. Though China repeatedly tried to bridge the gap across rounds, the Indian trio held their nerve, increasing their advantage before sealing the victory with a perfect final sequence of perfect 10s.

India survived a thrilling semi-final against South Korea in the semis

Before claiming the top step of the podium, the Indian team had to navigate a nail-biting semifinal against archery powerhouses South Korea, squeezing through by the barest of margins with a 235-233 victory.

The match saw intense back-and-forth action, with South Korea mounting a fierce second-half comeback to level the scores at 175-all. However, the Indian archers showed immense composure under pressure. Prithika and Jyothi spearheaded the attack by landing six 10s out of eight attempts, while Chikitha added five 10s to steer India through. A brilliant final rotation helped them edge out the Koreans by two points, setting the stage for their historic gold-medal performance against China.

China”s team comprising Wunier, Yue Wang and Fangyao Wei won the silver medal, while the South Korean team comprising Park Jungyoon, Park Yerin and Kang Yeonseo defeated Chinese Taipei to win the bronze medal.

India had defeated South Korea 234-233 to reach the final at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park here.

The Indian women’s compound team had won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. India had won five gold medals in archery at the last edition of the games in China.
