Belize Reef Restoration Effort: Lisa Carne revives storm-hit corals; project outplants 100,000 fragments
In 2001, Hurricane Iris wreaked havoc on Belize’s coral reefs, sparking an innovative restoration effort. Marine biologist Lisa Carne took the lead in replanting coral fragments, which were often neglected. Through her organization, Fragments of Hope, more than 100,000 corals have been successfully restored, resulting in a remarkable boost in coral coverage and marine biodiversity.
