England suffered a loss by two wickets in the ODI match of the Tri-Nation Series against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.

During the match, England’s skipper Harry Brook delivered a marvellous knock of 202 runs off 116 deliveries. His knock was laced with 21 boundaries and 10 maximums.

With this, he became the first-ever English batsman to register a double century in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The right-handed batsman also surpassed Team India’s superstar Shubman Gill‘s record for the fastest ODI double ton, reaching the milestone in just 114 balls.

Riding on his knock, Brook has also joined Chris Gayle on the elite list of players with a triple ton in Tests, an ODI double ton and a T20I century, according to Cricinfo.

Gayle has two Test triple tons, with best score of 333 against Sri Lanka in 2010 and 317 against South Africa in 2005. The ‘Universe Boss’ also has an ODI double ton, a 215-run knock against Zimbabwe in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Gayle also has two T20I tons.

Brook scored a monstrous triple ton against Pakistan at Multan in October 2024 and has two T20I tons. His first ODI double ton has also finally come, making him part of a two-man elite list.

The 27-year-old cricketer is leading the run-scoring charts in international cricket this year, with 1,815 runs in 37 ODIs and 41 innings at an average of 50.41 and a strike rate of 122.63, with four centuries and 11 half-centuries.

ENG vs SL ODI: Joe Root’s record

On the other hand, star batsman Joe Root also played a knock of 69 runs off 66 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries.

With this, he became the first English batsman to breach the 8,000-run mark in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Currently, his ODI career tally stands at 8,005 runs in 197 matches and 186 innings, at an average of 50.66 and a strike rate of 87.83. Root’s landmark places him 1,048 runs ahead of former England skipper Eoin Morgan, who occupies second place on England’s all-time ODI run-scoring list with 6957 runs in 225 matches under his belt.
