Fake WhatsApp app crosses 5 lakh downloads on Play Store:Learn how to identify real and counterfeit apps; 6 things to check before downloading
A fake WhatsApp application reportedly crossed 5 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store, raising concerns about users’ data safety. Reports say the app copied WhatsApp’s name, logo, and screenshots to look like the official messaging app. The imitation also appeared in a sponsored search result, increasing the chance that users would download it by mistake. Here is how the fake WhatsApp app was spotted, what makes it suspicious, and what Android users in India should do to protect themselves. How was the fake WhatsApp app spotted? The fake application came to attention after a Reddit user identified a suspicious WhatsApp listing on the Google Play Store. The issue was subsequently reported by technology publications Android Authority and The Verge. According to these reports, the app had been available since September and had reportedly crossed 5 lakh downloads. When The Verge reported on the issue on October 16, 2026, the listing was still available on Google Play. Google had not immediately responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. The application appeared under the name ‘WhatsApp Messenger’, making it look like the original messaging app. However, there was an important difference: the developer’s name was listed as ‘Agment Assets sallu’ instead of WhatsApp LLC. The listing also reportedly appeared as a sponsored result above the official app in search results. This could make it easier for users to mistake the imitation for the genuine application. What makes this fake WhatsApp app suspicious? Several details reportedly raised concerns about the application’s authenticity. 1. It uses WhatsApp’s name and logo The imitation reportedly copied the official app’s icon, screenshots, and parts of its description. This could make it difficult for users to distinguish between the two applications at first glance. 2. The developer’s name is different The genuine WhatsApp Messenger app is published by WhatsApp LLC. The suspicious listing, on the other hand, named its developer as Agment Assets sallu. The developer reportedly had no other applications listed on the platform. Checking the developer’s name is one of the simplest ways to identify a potentially fake app. 3. The listing appeared as a sponsored result Sponsored placements are advertisements that may appear prominently in search results. However, an app appearing at the top of Google Play does not automatically mean it is the official version. Users should verify an app’s publisher before installing it, even if the listing looks professional or appears above other results. 4. The app reportedly had limited review visibility Android Authority raised the possibility that the application was using Google Play’s Early Access programme, which could limit the visibility of public reviews. This may have made it more difficult for users to identify warning signs from other people’s experiences. However, this was reported as a possibility rather than a confirmed explanation. Can the fake WhatsApp app steal your personal data? The biggest concern with imitation applications is that users may unknowingly expose their personal information. Depending on how a fake app is designed and what permissions it receives, it could potentially collect sensitive information, display misleading prompts, or attempt to obtain account credentials. The suspicious listing reportedly claimed under its Data safety section that it did not collect or share user data. However, such declarations should not be treated as independent proof that an application is safe. For Indian users who rely on WhatsApp for personal conversations, family groups, work and business communication, an account compromise could create additional risks.
Someone who gains access to an account may attempt to impersonate its owner, contact their friends or relatives, or exploit their trust to request money. Note: Remember that an app’s name, icon, and appearance can be copied. The developer’s identity and the authenticity of the download source matter more than how familiar the listing looks. What should you do if you have already installed the fake app? If you suspect that the WhatsApp application on your Android phone is fake, take the following precautions.

A fake WhatsApp application reportedly reaching 5 lakh downloads on Google Play shows how convincing imitation apps can be. By copying the original app’s name, logo, and listing details, such applications may appear legitimate to unsuspecting users.
Although the reports do not establish that this particular app stole personal information, its reported presence on the Play Store is a reason to be cautious.
Remember: A familiar logo or sponsored listing does not guarantee an app is genuine. Always check the developer name! Official source: https://www.whatsapp.com/android
