Fasting during fertility treatment? Mumbai docs highlight important advice

Fasting during fertility treatment can be a concern for couples undergoing IVF or other assisted reproductive procedures. While some may wish to observe fasts, doctors advise that decisions should be made after considering the stage of treatment, the duration of fasting, hydration, nutritional intake, and prescribed medication schedules.

Many couples wish to fast during festivals. However, couples undergoing fertility treatments should be cautious. Fertility treatment involves several stages, including ovarian stimulation, monitoring, egg retrieval and embryo transfer. During these stages, the body’s nutritional and hydration needs, along with medication timings, may require particular attention. Prolonged fasting or inadequate fluid intake may cause dehydration, weakness, dizziness or low blood sugar in some individuals, potentially making treatment more difficult to manage.

“Fasting during fertility treatment should be assessed on an individual basis rather than following a blanket recommendation. The stage of treatment, the patient’s medical history, the medicines prescribed and the type of fast being observed all matter. During ovarian stimulation and around egg retrieval, patients should discuss fasting in advance with their fertility specialist, particularly because some procedures require specific fasting instructions before anaesthesia or sedation. Patients should not change medication timings or skip prescribed doses without consulting their treating doctor,” says Dr. Sneha Sathe, clinical director and fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility in Chembur.

Dr Sathe further adds, “Adequate nutrition and hydration are important during fertility treatment. Patients who observe a fast that restricts both food and water may be at greater risk of dehydration, especially if the fast is prolonged or they are experiencing nausea, vomiting or weakness. Those with conditions such as diabetes or other medical concerns may need additional precautions. There is no single fasting recommendation that applies to every patient undergoing IVF. Couples should inform their fertility team about their fasting plans so that they can receive advice suited to their treatment schedule and health needs.”

“Patients should remember that fertility treatment is a planned medical process, and their health and safety must remain the priority. If fasting is important to them, they should discuss possible adjustments with their fertility specialist and gynaecologist before beginning. They should seek medical advice if they experience dizziness, fainting, persistent vomiting or significant weakness. Individualised guidance can help patients make informed decisions without compromising their treatment or well-being,” concluded Dr Rita Modi, who is the senior consultant fertility and IVF at Motherhood Fertility & IVF in Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.
