India’s Sarvam to build AI tools for Army and Navy:Project will develop technology for military operations and training under a 5-year deal

Artificial intelligence is becoming an important part of modern warfare, and India is looking to strengthen its capabilities with homegrown technology. Indian AI startup Sarvam has signed a five-year agreement with the Ministry of Defence and Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) to develop AI applications for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Under the agreement, Sarvam will build AI tools to support military operations, training and decision-making. The initiative is also part of the government’s push to reduce dependence on foreign technology and promote self-reliance in defence. The financial details of the agreement and individual projects have not been disclosed. Sarvam to develop AI tools for India’s armed forces The agreement provides a framework for AI projects across all three military services, along with joint organisations working under HQ IDS. Sarvam will develop AI applications based on the requirements of the armed forces and provide technical support as the projects progress. The work will be carried out by Chanakya, Sarvam’s dedicated division for national security and defence. It will use the company’s AI technology, including its Sarvam 105B foundation model. The two sides will also explore projects that connect different parts of India’s defence systems through a common AI framework. AI to support military operations and decision-making The proposed technology could help the armed forces analyse information, combine data from different sources, and support decisions during operations. The agreement identifies several areas where AI could be used, including: The agreement also covers technology that connects information gathered by sensors with systems used during military operations. However, the announcement states that human oversight will remain in place for operational decisions. AI systems to use Indian technology and infrastructure Sarvam and HQ IDS plan to build the AI systems using Indian data, computing resources and infrastructure designed to keep control of the technology within the country. The armed forces will also be able to use common AI models, software systems and tools for understanding geographical information and interpreting data from different sources. According to the announcement, experience gained from projects for one military service could also help improve future projects for the Army, Navy and Air Force. Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar said: Sarvam exists to build AI in India, for India. The core of that mission is to put the country’s own intelligence into the systems it depends on. He added that working with the three services on India’s defence was an honour and a privilege. India joins the global military AI race Countries worldwide are exploring how AI can support military planning, intelligence analysis and battlefield operations. The US, for example, has seen disagreements between the government and AI company Anthropic over the use of AI in military applications. The Pentagon has also signed an agreement with OpenAI to use its technology. For India, the Sarvam partnership represents an effort to develop defence AI capabilities using homegrown technology.
Why is Sarvam trending on Google? Sarvam is trending after signing a five-year deal with India’s Ministry of Defence to develop AI tools for the Army, Navy and Air Force. The partnership aims to use indigenous AI technology for military operations, training and decision-making. It also highlights India’s growing focus on strengthening its defence capabilities through AI.
