Instagram bans harassing videos shot using Meta smart glasses:How these AI glasses reveal strangers’ personal information; why influencers promote them
Imagine talking to someone in a cafe, at a gym, or while working at a store, only to later discover the entire interaction was secretly recorded and uploaded online. That is exactly the growing concern surrounding Meta’s smart glasses. Meta AI smart glasses have recently come under the spotlight after a social media user shared a photo claiming that a Delhi Police officer was wearing the device during the student protests at Jantar Mantar. The post quickly went viral, sparking discussions about surveillance, privacy, and the growing use of wearable AI technology. To tackle this problem, Instagram has announced tougher action against videos recorded using Meta smart glasses that secretly film people in public and are later posted as prank, pickup, or harassment content. Why is Instagram taking action? Over the past few months, videos recorded through Meta smart glasses have become increasingly popular on Instagram Reels and TikTok. Many creators have been using the glasses to secretly record: In many cases, the people being filmed have no idea they are being recorded until the videos are uploaded online. Instagram says this type of content crosses the line from entertainment into harassment. Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained the company’s stance during an Instagram Stories QA: If you’re posting content that is taking advantage of people and harassing them, like a lot of these pickup line kind of videos that we’ve heard of and seen, then we’re going to take the content down. He added: We don’t want people to be surreptitiously taking videos of other people and harassing them and then posting them on our platform. So we’re trying to fight that every way we can. Influencers have been using the glasses to create viral content One of the biggest reasons behind Instagram’s new policy is the rise of influencers using Meta smart glasses to create viral videos. Some creators wear the glasses while: Because the camera is built into the glasses, many people do not realise they are being filmed until much later. Some of these videos attract millions of views, encouraging others to create similar content. Influencer faces backlash over Meta smart glasses promotion Indian influencer Rida Tharana recently faced criticism after promoting Meta AI smart glasses during the Meta Connect event. Following the backlash, she shared a clarification, saying she partnered with Meta last year because she found the glasses useful for their intended purpose. She said she had specifically asked whether the glasses could secretly record people and was told that the blinking LED light would always indicate when recording was active. Rida added that recent reports about the misuse of the glasses have made her rethink their privacy implications. She said she, like many others, promoted the product based on the information available at the time and did not anticipate that it could be misused in ways that raise serious privacy concerns. She also said the incident has reinforced the importance of choosing brand partnerships responsibly and promised to be more mindful in the future. Instagram has already removed popular accounts According to a Business Insider report, Instagram has already taken action. The platform removed two large accounts that regularly posted pickup videos filmed using Meta smart glasses. Both accounts reportedly had more than one million followers. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the accounts were removed because they violated Instagram’s policy against harassing content. Meta has not revealed exactly how many videos have been removed under the updated policy or how it decides which videos break the rules.

Meta is also updating its smart glasses Along with Instagram’s policy changes, Meta has introduced a software update for its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to improve privacy. The glasses have a small LED indicator light that turns on whenever recording starts. However, people discovered ways to hide or block this light by covering it with tape or modifying the glasses, making it difficult for others to know they were being recorded. The latest software update prevents this. If the glasses detect that the recording indicator light has been covered or tampered with, the camera automatically stops working. The update is designed to make secret recording more difficult.
A step toward protecting privacy Instagram’s latest crackdown signals that social media platforms are becoming less tolerant of content that invades people’s privacy for entertainment.
While Meta has strengthened the privacy features on its smart glasses and Instagram is removing videos that harass or secretly film strangers, many believe the debate over wearable cameras is far from over.
