‘IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to again meet Meta global team’:Govt quizzes whether company following law of the land or not

Meta’s global leadership team met Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY) senior officials in New Delhi for the second straight day on Thursday, 6 August, 2026. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is also expected to join the meeting. Citing government sources, news agency PTI says that meetings with Meta team will continue for 3-4 days. While ANI said Meta’s global team will remain in India for a few more days. Three to four additional meetings are expected to take place. The upcoming round of discussions will also cover issues related to WhatsApp. Meta will also be questioned on their algorithms, whether compliance mechanism has sufficient checks and balances, and guardrails to meet constitutional and legal requirements, government sources said. These meetings follow the Centre’s recent summons to Meta after a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefly restricted on the platform. Although the company later restored the post and attributed the incident to a technical glitch, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had termed the explanation ‘inadequate’. Meta apologises for temporary removal of PM Modi’s FB post On Wenesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had apologised for the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post, calling it an operational error, according to government sources. Meta’s global affairs head Joel Kaplan, who flew in from the US for meetings with Indian officials, in a written statement said regarding Zuckerberg that he “apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post.” Government sources, who refused to be identified, said the apology came from company chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg had also apologised for the presence of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), deepfake content and operational lapses on the company’s platforms.
