The restored garage and vintage car of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Jorasanko Thakur Bari here were inaugurated on Wednesday and opened to the public following a seven-month conservation project.

According to the project organisers, the garage and the vintage vehicle had been lying in a dilapidated condition for years. The structure had suffered damage to its roof, walls and flooring, while vegetation had overgrown the site. The vintage automobile had also shown signs of severe neglect.

The restoration involved structural repairs, cleaning and conservation of the garage while retaining its historical character. The vintage car was professionally restored and preserved. The renovated space also features new lighting, decor and a custom wall painting, the project organisers said in a statement.

The heritage space at Thakurbari in north Kolkata’s Jorasanko area was named ‘Rabindra Smritirath’.

The Jorasanko Thakurbari is the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore who was not only born and raised here but also spent a substantial part of his life and breathed his last in this building.

The conservation initiative was undertaken with the support of Techno India Group, which said the project sought to preserve an important part of Bengal’s cultural heritage.
