Korea Masters Super 300: India's Ashmita Chaliha seals final berth

Ashmita Chaliha continued her impressive run at the Korea Masters Super 300, overcoming teenage compatriot Rakshitha Ramraj 21-13, 16-21, 21-13 to reach her maiden BWF World Tour singles final, here on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Indian, who returned in May after a three-month layoff due to a medial meniscus tear in her right knee, has enjoyed a strong comeback on the BWF Tour — she also reached the semi-finals at the Macau Open. World No. 50 Ashmita, who trains under Park Tae-sang at the National centre of excellence, Guwahati, will now battle China’s 35th-ranked Han Qianxi for the title in the summit clash.

In the semi-final, Ashmita came out aggressively and quickly moved from 2-2 to 6-2 in the opening game. She then reeled off five straight points to establish a 13-6 lead before closing the game out 21-13. However, Rakshitha responded strongly in the second game, racing to a 4-1 lead as Ashmita struggled to control the lifts and went long twice — besides finding the net — to fall 6-12 behind.

Ashmita then bounced back to narrow the gap to 12-13, but her momentum stalled thereafter, losing the second game 16-21. However, Ashmita began the decider with a fresh lease of life as she surged to an 11-3 lead with a series of smashes and some unforced errors from Rakshitha. 

Although she grew a bit error prone as the game went on, she still managed to keep well out of sight of her opponent, and eventually won the match when Rakshitha.

Ashmita Chaliha was ruled out for three months this year due to a medial meniscus tear in her right knee. She returned in May and since then has reached two semi-finals in the last three tournaments.
