Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has captured his second straight MLS Golden Boot award, concluding the 2026 regular season with 26 goals as Inter Miami gears up to defend its coveted MLS Cup crown.

Although Messi was kept off the scoresheet during Miami’s final regular-season fixture against Charlotte FC, a 3-3 draw in which the Herons relinquished a comfortable three-goal advantage at home, he still maintained a clear lead atop the league’s scoring leaderboard. FC Dallas striker Petar Musa finished second with 22 goals, followed by Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge at 21 and Vancouver Whitecaps’ Brian White with 20. Having netted 29 goals last campaign, Messi’s latest achievement makes him the first player in league history to secure back-to-back Golden Boot honours.

Messi’s goals helped Inter Miami reach a league-leading 80 goals this term, with the veteran forward accounting for nearly a third of that team output. Alongside his prolific scoring, the 39-year-old registered 17 assists, falling just one short of leader Pep Biel, while playing 2,664 minutes across the regular season.

He also topped the charts with 183 attempted shots, comfortably ahead of Philadelphia Union’s Milan Iloski (122), and recorded 76 shots on target, sitting 25 clear of LAFC’s Denis Bouanga. One of his most memorable displays arrived in August when he netted four times in a dominant 7-1 thrashing of Montreal.

Messi’s playoff pursuit and milestone year

Inter Miami now shifts its focus toward the intense MLS Cup postseason, finishing second in the Eastern Conference standings behind Nashville SC. The club kicks off its title defence against the seventh-seeded Columbus Crew in an exciting best-of-three opening-round series.

No franchise has successfully defended the MLS Cup crown since the LA Galaxy did so in 2011 and 2012. Individually, Messi is also strongly vying for his third consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player award, a prestigious recognition that would further extend his own record.

Beyond domestic club commitments, Messi’s 2026 season was powerfully shaped by major international milestones and personal hurdles. He brilliantly guided Argentina to the World Cup final, contributing directly to a fifth-place finish in Ballon d’Or voting, before subsequently retiring from international duty, all while coping with the deep personal loss of his father.

As Inter Miami chase back-to-back titles, Messi’s enduring brilliance ensures he remains a defining attacking force in American soccer.
