'Many, many congratulations…': Infantino on Cristiano Ronaldo's achievements

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Uzbekistan, Portugal emerged victorious by 5-0 at the Houston Stadium in Texas.

During the match, Portugal’s superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace. With this, he surpassed legendary Eusebio to become Portugal’s highest goal-scorer in World Cup history.

He also achieved the feat of becoming the first-ever player in tournament’s history to score in six different FIFA World Cups.

Following the two goals, FIFA President Gianni Infantino shared a congratulatory post on his official social media handle.

With his brace against Uzbekistan, the Portugal captain is now the only player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments and also his country’s all-time top scorer in @fifaworldcup history, moving past the legendary Eusebio. Currently, the 41-year-old footballer has a total of 10 goals in the FIFA World Cup’s history. Behind him and Eusebio, Pauleta is third on Portugal’s World Cup scoring list with four goals.

Along with Ronaldo’s two goals, Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao also tasted success in finding the net. An own goal from Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov made Portugal’s goal tally go up to five.

Roberto Martinez‘s men successfully registered their first victory in the ongoing edition of the global showpiece.

Earlier, the Portuguese men’s first game ended in a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. The victory against Uzbekistan also helped Ronaldo to regain confidence after a difficult outing in the campaign-opening match.

Coming to the match, Portugal produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Uzbekistan, taking control early with Ronaldo opening the scoring in the 6th minute before Nuno Mendes added a stunning free-kick and Ronaldo struck again to make it 3-0 before half-time.

After the break, Uzbekistan rarely threatened, with Portugal continuing to dominate possession and extending their lead in the 60th minute through an own goal following a Joao Felix flick from a Bruno Fernandes corner. Substitute Rafael Leao added a fifth goal late on to complete a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

The win earned Portugal three important points and strengthened their position in the group, while also boosting their goal difference ahead of the final group match.
