Meta takes down Instagram AI image feature after privacy backlash:Feature let users create AI pictures of anyone with public account by simply entering their username
Meta has removed a newly launched AI feature from Instagram after it received widespread criticism over privacy concerns. The feature allowed people to create AI-generated images of anyone with a public Instagram account simply by mentioning their username in a prompt. Many users felt the tool crossed a line by letting others use their photos without permission. After facing strong backlash online, Meta admitted it had “missed the mark” and decided to remove the feature. What was the AI feature? The feature was part of Meta’s new AI image-generation tool called ‘Muse Image.’ It allowed users to create AI-generated images based on public Instagram profiles. For example, a user could tag someone’s public Instagram account while giving a prompt, and the AI would generate a new image inspired by that person’s appearance. However, this feature has now been suspended. Muse Image itself is still available, but it can no longer create images using other people’s Instagram accounts. Why did people object? All public Instagram accounts were automatically included in the feature. This meant anyone with a public profile could have AI-generated images created of them unless they manually turned the option off. Users were also not notified when someone used their profile to generate an AI image. Many people worried this could lead to misuse, including creating unwanted or misleading images without a person’s knowledge. Although private accounts and users under 18 were never included, critics argued that public account holders should have been asked for permission before being added. Meta accepts its mistake In a blog post, Meta said the goal was to offer a creative AI tool while giving people control over how their public content was used. However, after listening to feedback, the company admitted the feature was not received as expected. Meta said it had “missed the mark” and confirmed that the feature is no longer available. If users now try to generate an image by tagging someone’s Instagram account, Meta AI will refuse the request. Meta also changed Instagram settings Along with removing the feature, Meta has also removed the setting that allowed public users to control whether their Instagram content could be reused for AI image creation. Since the feature has been withdrawn, this option is no longer needed. Meta’s decision to remove the feature highlights how important privacy has become in the age of AI. While AI tools continue to improve, users expect companies to put consent and safety first. The controversy also serves as a reminder that powerful AI features need strong privacy protections before they are rolled out to millions of people.
