Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar suggests these three foods for a bad stomach
Suffering from a bad stomach is quite common among a lot of people. While some find quick relief, others bear with it or find home remedies to help them out.
While there every home has its own remedies, there are many who may often not find relief, or for others who live away from home, and don’t have access to this advice, there is help. Often sharing timely advice on her social media pages, Indian celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar says there are many different ways to take care of a bad stomach. While many people are hesitant about the kind of foods to eat, she says three foods can help.
While persistent or severe stomach upset should not be ignored, certain simple foods may help soothe the digestive system and make you feel more comfortable. From stewed fruits to curd or simple rice-based meals, some everyday foods can be gentle on the stomach while also providing nourishment.
Here are three options that may help when your stomach is feeling unsettled.
1. Stewed apple or pear
If your stomach is aching, Diwekar says a simple stewed apple or pear can be a gentle option. To prepare it, cut the fruit into pieces and boil it in water for around 10 to 15 minutes, or until it becomes soft. You can eat it warm or allow it to cool, depending on your preference.
She adds that stewing the fruit makes it softer and easier to eat when your appetite is low. Apples and pears also contain pectin, a type of soluble fibre that can support digestion.
The natural sweetness of the fruit may also make the meal more appealing when you are not feeling like eating.
Both fruits contain polyphenols as well, which are plant compounds associated with various health benefits, including uplifting your mood. If you do not enjoy apples or pears, banana is another simple fruit that can be considered when your stomach feels unsettled.
2. Curd or buttermilk
It is not only stewed apple or pear, the city-based celebrity nutritionist says curd, along with buttermilk, commonly known as chaas, are other options when digestive discomfort strikes. They contain live bacterial cultures, which are often associated with gut health.
A small serving of plain curd or chaas may be easier to consume when you are experiencing bloating or have a reduced appetite.
For those who prefer it, a small amount of dry ginger powder and salt can be added to curd or chaas, to boost your immunity if you are feeling like you are coming in for a fever.
3. Rice
Simple rice-based meals can also be comforting when your stomach is upset. Instead of eating heavily spiced or oily food, you can have rice prepared as a light rice soup with a pinch of salt. A little black pepper can also be added if it suits you to help as a digestive aid.
Another familiar option is dal-rice or khichdi is another gentle meal that can be made with rice and dal, while plain rice with a little ghee and salt can work when you want something extremely simple. These dishes contain resistant starch, acts as a prebiotic and support beneficial gut bacteria, and push away any negativity you have about the stomach upset.
These foods can provide simple, familiar options when you are dealing with temporary stomach discomfort so that it remains only for a few hours and not for a few days, she cautions.
Diwekar shard the timely video saying, “And avoid all packaged and processed foods like – colas, chips, chocolates, tetra pack juices, energy/ caffeinated drinks, etc. Also, stay off paneer, eggs, non-veg for the first 48 hrs. Raw salads too.”
