Rana clinches gold, Juyal bags silver in para shot put

Indian para shot putter Soman Rana clinched gold, while fellow Indian  Shubham Juyal  bagged silver as the country enjoyed a productive day at the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday.

Competing in the men’s F57 event, Rana, an Asian Para Games silver medallist in 2022, hurled the globe for a season’s best 13.40m to stand on top of the podium.

Compatriot Juyal (season’s best 13.28m) pocketed the silver, while Cameron’s Cedric Azamdzi (12.57m) took home the bronze.

Indian para sports athletes scripted history in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as they equaled the haul of all the previous editions put together, winning seven medals. 

The 28-member Indian para sports contingent ended their campaign with seven medals — 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

Judoka Unnati bags bronze

Meanwhile, Indian judoka Unnati Sharma clinched the bronze medal in the women’s -63kg judo event, defeating South Africa’s Skye Knoester by Ippon.

Unnati wrapped up the contest in just 1 minute and 7 seconds with a decisive move, hooking her leg to unbalance Knoester before throwing her cleanly onto her back to earn an Ippon — the highest score in judo. The Indian had earlier gone down to Australia’s Saya Middleton in the semi-final.
