Scientists discover giant Chinese fungus with 65-million-year history
A giant fungus named Dianjunus rex was discovered in the forests of southwestern China. The fungal species can weigh up to 2.2 kilograms and reaches heights of 50 centimeters. Its lineage diverged from relatives approximately 65 million years ago during the Paleocene era. Researchers utilized DNA analysis to confirm its distinct evolutionary status within the fungal family. This finding contributes to the understanding of ancient fungi and their adaptations.
