Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the second round of the women’s singles competition with an impressive straight-game win over fifth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani at the Singapore Open here on Tuesday. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, produced a composed performance to outwit her Indonesian opponent 21-17, 21-18 in the opening round. The Indian will next face Japan’s Riko Gunji.

Meanwhile, Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also progressed after battling past Malaysia’s Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith 26-28, 21-15, 21-13 in the men’s doubles opening round. The Indian pair will take on either Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan or China’s Liu Yang and Huang Di in the next round.
However, Ayush Shetty, a finalist at Asia Championships, bowed out after going down 21-11 14-21 12-21 to world championships bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen, while Unnati Hooda was also ousted after a 14-21 10-21 to Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki.
