Mumbai’s Suryansh Shedge has emerged as a strong contender to earn his maiden call-up in India’s squad for the series against New Zealand.

The chances of him getting a call-up have come after stunning performances in the concluded List A series against Australia A.

The 23-year-old cricketer has represented India in three T20I matches in England and has recently returned to competitive cricket after recovering from his hamstring injury. He has delivered impressive performances with both bat and ball in the unofficial one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry.

In the first match, he bagged four wickets and delivered a knock of 66 runs in a winning cause in the final one-day match.

A source close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that star all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy won’t play all the ODI matches, following which Shedge may get a maiden call-up.

“Shedge has a very high chance of making it to the ODI squad simply because Nitish Kumar Reddy will have an important role to play in the Test series as the fourth seamer and a floater in the lower order. Hence, Reddy won’t play all the ODIs as he has to prepare for the red-ball games,” the source said.

The five-match T20I series between the teams will begin from October 22, with the first match scheduled to be played at Hagley Park South in the central city of Christchurch. The first match of the five-match ODI series will be played on November 4 at the Eden Park in Auckland. The two-match Test series between Team India and New Zealand will begin from November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

On the other hand, New Zealand has named a split ODI squad for the series against the “Men in Blue”.
