Tech companies infiltrate US schools under the guise of AI:Companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI providing training and tools; protests in many places
The influence of big tech companies in American schools is growing rapidly. Amidst the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), companies like Microsoft, Google, Apple, and OpenAI are providing training, workshops, and technical tools for teachers and students. However, their growing interference is now facing opposition as well. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), in collaboration with Microsoft and OpenAI, has launched an AI training program worth over 2.2 billion rupees. Critics argue that this will increase the influence of corporate interests on the education system and could weaken the role of teachers.
Along with providing laptops, tablets, operating systems, and apps to schools, tech companies also advocate for including their preferred subjects in the curriculum. Microsoft also provides computer science education through its Minecraft game. Large school systems, such as the Los Angeles Unified School District, have decided to stop the use of iPads and Chromebooks for young children amidst opposition.
AI chatbots vs school teachers
About a decade ago, tech companies promoted coding in schools to address the shortage of software engineers. Now, with AI writing its own code and layoffs occurring in tech companies, their focus has shifted to AI education. Some teachers and professors have warned that AI chatbots could automate essential teacher tasks, such as providing feedback to students. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith stated that this trend began because public schools often seemed unable to teach important modern subjects and prepare students for the constantly changing demands of the market. He asked where schools would be today without the support of corporations like Microsoft. Google’s Dominance Google has established dominance in schools through affordable Chromebooks and free apps. Its market share has reached 59%. Google’s goal is to get children accustomed to services like Gmail and Chrome from a young age so that they can profit from data and advertisements later. Some parents and schools are now frustrated with the excessive use of screens.
