Two new semiconductor units to come up in Gujarat:Union Cabinet approves India’s first commercial mini/micro-LED display facility in Dholera
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit two significant semiconductor manufacturing projects in Gujarat under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). At the focal point is the establishment of the country’s first commercial mini/micro-LED display facility. Utilising advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, this first-of-its-kind project in Dholera joins a new assembly unit in Surat to drive a combined investment of ₹3,936 crore. Together, as an official release states, these initiatives under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) are expected to create over 2,200 skilled jobs and significantly reduce the nation’s reliance on imported display and chip components. Advanced display and packaging facilities for semi-conductors in Gujarat Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) is set to establish the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility in Dholera. Utilising Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, the integrated plant will produce display modules for a wide range of electronics, from smartphones and automotive screens to high-end Extended Reality (XR) glasses. This facility will feature an annual production capacity of 72,000 square meters of display panels. Simultaneously, Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) will launch an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) unit in Surat. With a targeted output of over 1,000 million chips per year, the facility will focus on discrete semiconductors used in power electronics and industrial automation, serving the automotive and consumer electronics sectors. Gujarat’s growing semiconductor ecosystem These approvals bring the total nationwide number of ISM-supported projects to 12, with cumulative investments now reaching ₹1.64 lakh crore. The new units join a burgeoning cluster in Gujarat that already includes major players like Tata Electronics, Micron, and CG Power. Ship repair infrastructure at Vadinar In a separate move to bolster the maritime sector, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a ₹1,570 crore ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district. A joint venture between Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard, the facility will feature two large floating dry docks. It is designed to handle vessels up to 300 meters in length, filling a critical infrastructure gap and capturing high-value repair work that was previously outsourced abroad.
