Wetland lies in waiting: Why Ramsar tag eludes Dhanauri

Dhanauri, a haven for nearly 217 bird species including the sarus crane, meets criteria for international wetland status but remains officially unrecognized. Despite Supreme Court directives for wetland protection and a Union ministry’s push for Ramsar designation, bureaucratic delays and state inaction have stalled progress. Environmentalists fear real estate interests are hindering conservation efforts.
