True growth happens when you transition to complex grammar, advanced reading, or live conversation.

Avoid the autopilot trap: Dr Shetty notes a simple rule: if a task has become easy, it has stopped helping. The brain only grows when it is appropriately challenged.
Time investment and lifestyle synergies: How much is enough?
For a busy working adult or parent, finding hours for self-improvement can feel daunting. Fortunately, Lalla advises that you should focus far more on consistency than on spending exhausting hours on cognitive tasks.
Around three to four hours a week, thoughtfully spread across several days, serves as a practical target. Even focused sessions of 20 to 30 minutes a day can yield massive benefits if the activity genuinely pushes your cognitive limits. Whether you choose to learn a new language, play an instrument, absorb complex reading material, or take up a technical course, the golden rule is progressive overload. Furthermore, Dr Lalla stresses that cognitive activities operate best when supported by four key pillars:
1. Adequate sleep: Sleep is essential for memory consolidation. Chronic sleep deprivation (such as consistently getting only five hours of rest) severely blunts how effectively the brain encodes and retains learning.
2. Physical exercise: Movement boosts blood flow and nourishes memory centres.
3. Social engagement: Interacting with others stimulates emotional and cognitive processing networks simultaneously.
4. Overall physical health: Managing blood pressure, monitoring hearing, and maintaining metabolic wellness protect neural tissue from systemic stress.
Dynamic movement and multilingualism
When considering physical health, many people default to running on a treadmill. While any form of cardiovascular exercise improves blood flow, routine treadmill running quickly puts the brain on autopilot because the movement is entirely repetitive.
Dr Shetty suggests branching out into activities like dancing, rock climbing, or martial arts. “These pursuits demand that you actively memorise choreography, maintain rhythm, balance your body, watch surrounding partners, and adapt instantly to changing cues. By forcing multiple sensory and motor regions to work together, you exercise not just your physical body, but your brain as well. Enhanced balance also translates directly to fewer falls and subsequent head injuries which serves as an important safeguard, given that head trauma is an independent risk factor for dementia,” he explains.
Similarly, language acquisition offers profound neurological rewards. While children pick up languages implicitly, adults can still achieve remarkable cognitive gains through dedicated study. Dr Shetty highlights a fascinating study from Hyderabad which revealed that individuals who spoke two or more languages developed dementia roughly four and a half years later than monolingual speakers—a protective delay observed even among individuals who could not read or write.
In diverse regions like India, many adults naturally switch between multiple languages daily, providing a wonderful natural workout for executive control systems. Actively studying a brand-new tongue and pushing yourself to speak it regularly elevates this mental exercise to the next level.
Overcoming age barriers: Neuroplasticity in your 50s, 60s, and beyond
A frequent worry among older adults is that it is simply too late to cultivate new mental habits. Both experts firmly reject this notion. The human brain retains its capacity to learn, adapt, and reorganise throughout life, a foundational property known as neuroplasticity.
While ageing naturally alters processing speed and memory retrieval timelines, it never completely strips away your ability to acquire fresh skills. Dr Lalla encourages anyone in their 50s or 60s to select a genuinely novel, progressively challenging pursuit—such as mastering a musical instrument, studying history, or picking up a creative craft—and weave it consistently into their daily routine. Cognitive reserve is not a fixed bank account that must be filled exclusively during youth; ongoing mental, physical, and social engagement remains intensely protective well into later life.
