World’s first high-altitude electricity generated at 13,000 feet:China flew a craft as big as a Boeing 747 in the sky; here’s how this technology works
China has achieved success in generating electricity from strong winds at an altitude of 13,000 feet. According to Chinese state media CCTV, this is the first time in the world that electricity has been generated by flying an airborne wind energy system at such an altitude. This prototype craft has been named ‘S4000’. During the test conducted in northwestern China, it successfully completed the entire work cycle of ascending, remaining stable in the air, generating electricity, and returning safely. According to experts, this experiment is a major step towards the commercial use of high-altitude wind power technology. The craft is as big as a Boeing 747 and flies with helium gas This craft is as large as a Boeing 747 plane and looks like an airship. It contains helium gas, which helps it float in the sky without fuel. Easy Power Supply in Disaster-Prone Areas The biggest feature of this craft is that it can be easily transported from one place to another. This system will be very helpful in places where power grids or traditional electricity poles cannot reach. It can be used to provide an immediate power supply in remote deserts, hilly areas, islands, and regions affected by natural disasters. Joint project of Beijing startup and Tsinghua University The S4000 craft has been developed by Beijing startup ‘Soways Energy Technology’ in collaboration with Tsinghua University and the Aerospace Information Research Institute. Founded in 2023, this startup has named its crafts based on their flight capabilities. The company has received orders worth approximately ₹700 crore for its previous models by March. Developers claim that the cost of generating electricity at an altitude of 3,000 meters will be approximately equal to that of ground-based wind turbines.
Meanwhile, if the craft is at an altitude of 9,000 meters, it can operate for more than 8,000 hours a year. At this altitude, the cost of electricity generation will be only about 35 to 40 paise per kilowatt-hour. This project is part of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan In addition to fully airborne systems, Chinese developers are also adopting another method of generating electricity from high-altitude winds. This involves the use of flying devices connected to ground-based generators.
Last September, a massive parachute with a span of 5,000 square meters was launched from Beijing, which traps high-altitude winds to rotate the generator. Why is it more beneficial to install turbines in the sky compared to the ground?
