You will need to log in to read Reddit posts:Social media platform tightens rules as Google AI hits traffic
Popular social media platform Reddit is planning to introduce new rules that may require users to log in before they can read posts or browse communities. The move is aimed at tackling the growing use of Reddit content by artificial intelligence (AI) companies and addressing changes in how people find information online. However, the decision could also affect users who prefer browsing discussions without creating an account. Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged that the change would be significant, saying: I don’t know about you, but as someone whose life has been defined by the open internet, it’s a big change for me. But I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the right decision for our platform and the right decision for our business. Why is Reddit planning to make logins mandatory? There are two main reasons behind Reddit’s planned changes: declining traffic from search engines and concerns about AI companies collecting content from its platform. 1. Reddit is getting less traffic from Google For years, people have added the word “Reddit” to Google searches to find real-life experiences, opinions and answers from other users. However, AI-powered search tools can now provide direct answers to many questions, reducing the need for users to visit individual websites. This shift is affecting how people discover online content. According to the information cited in the report, Reddit has been losing more than one million search visits per week on average. Requiring users to log in could help the company regain greater control over how people access its content. 2. Reddit wants to limit AI data scraping AI companies collect large amounts of online information to train and improve their chatbots. Reddit discussions can be valuable for this purpose because they contain conversations, personal experiences and answers to everyday questions. Some automated bots can access websites without logging in, making publicly available Reddit content easier to collect. By introducing login requirements, Reddit hopes to make it harder for unauthorised bots to gather its data. The company can also continue licensing its content to AI businesses through commercial agreements that include specific conditions for how the data can be used. Reddit is earning more despite changes in traffic Although Reddit is facing challenges with search traffic, its financial performance has remained strong. The platform reported revenue of $895 million, a 53 per cent increase, while its profit reached $283 million. At the same time, its daily active users in the US reportedly fell from 53.2 million to 50.7 million. Reddit’s business model relies heavily on advertising. When users log in, the platform can use their activity and interests to personalise recommendations and display more relevant advertisements. Features such as its “For You” feed also help users discover posts based on their interests. For Reddit, encouraging more people to sign in could make it easier to personalise the experience and generate advertising revenue.
Will Reddit stop working for users without an account? The change is not expected to happen everywhere overnight. Reddit plans to test the new login rules in selected countries outside the US before considering a wider rollout. The company has also indicated that using Reddit with an account does not necessarily mean revealing your real identity. Users can choose a username that does not disclose their personal details. Reddit is also working on changes to its mobile app’s incognito mode. This could offer users another way to browse without tying their activity to their regular account, although the final details of the feature remain to be seen. What does this mean for Reddit users in India? If Reddit expands the login requirement globally, Indian users who browse the platform without signing in may also be affected.
People who regularly visit Reddit through Google searches to find product reviews, troubleshooting advice, discussions or personal experiences may have to create an account to access some content.
