NASA, SpaceX target October 1 for Crew-13 mission to ISS:What the mission is about and what 4 astronauts will do aboard Dragon spacecraft
Four astronauts are getting ready to leave Earth for the International Space Station (ISS) as NASA and SpaceX prepare for the next crew rotation mission. Crew-13 is currently targeted to launch on October 1, 2026, at 11:10 a.m. EDT (8:40 p.m. IST) from Florida. The astronauts will travel aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, launched by a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Teams are now carrying out final checks of the crew, spacecraft, rocket, and ISS before launch. When will SpaceX Crew-13 launch?
NASA and SpaceX are targeting October 1 for Crew-13’s launch. If everything remains on schedule, Falcon 9 will lift off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The four astronauts entered routine pre-launch quarantine at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on September 17. The quarantine is meant to reduce the risk of illness before the mission. NASA says teams will continue conducting reviews and checks to make sure the Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9, ISS, and crew are ready for the mission. Who is flying on Crew-13? Crew-13 will carry four astronauts from three space agencies: After reaching the ISS, the four will join Expedition 75 and spend an extended period conducting research aboard the station. Jessica Watkins will fly on Dragon for a second time
One of the highlights of Crew-13 is NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, who is returning to the ISS after her first spaceflight in 2022. Watkins previously flew aboard SpaceX’s Crew-4 mission and spent 170 days in space. With Crew-13, she will become the first NASA astronaut to launch aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft twice. Watkins is also a geologist. Before becoming an astronaut, she studied the geology of Mars and Earth and was part of NASA’s Curiosity rover science team. For the other three crew members, Crew-13 will be their first spaceflight. Why was the Crew-13 launch delayed? Crew-13 was originally expected to launch earlier, but NASA and SpaceX changed the schedule after detecting an oxidiser leak in Dragon’s propulsion system during routine pre-launch processing. NASA and SpaceX carried out additional testing and reviewed the spacecraft’s data before making the necessary repairs. NASA later confirmed that an oxidiser valve in Dragon’s propulsion system had been replaced. The crew subsequently entered quarantine as preparations moved towards the October launch attempt. What will Crew-13 do at the ISS?
Crew-13 is primarily a science and research mission. During their stay aboard the ISS, the astronauts will conduct experiments and technology demonstrations in microgravity. Some of this research is aimed at helping NASA prepare for future human missions to the Moon and Mars. Other experiments could help develop technologies and applications that are useful on Earth. The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme, which uses private spacecraft such as SpaceX’s Dragon to transport astronauts to and from the ISS. Crew-13 will be the 13th crew rotation mission under the programme and the 14th Dragon flight carrying people, including the Demo-2 test flight. What happens after liftoff? After launch, the Dragon spacecraft will travel toward the ISS and prepare to dock with the orbital laboratory. Once they arrive, the four astronauts will join the existing Expedition 75 crew and begin their long-duration mission. The mission will also continue the growing use of commercial spacecraft for transporting astronauts to low Earth orbit, while the research carried out aboard the ISS supports NASA’s longer-term plans for human exploration beyond Earth.
