Google to restrict student ‘Search’ access without school AI approval:Educational administrators will control which services kids can access

Google is changing the way schools manage its AI-powered education tools. Earlier, the company had enabled its Gemini chatbot for many students using Google Classroom. However, following criticism from parents, teachers, and education experts, Google has decided to give school administrators more control over these features. Under the new approach, access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search will be switched off by default for K-12 student accounts. School administrators will have to decide which services students can use and enable them accordingly. However, there is an important condition. Schools that completely reject Google’s AI features will also lose access to Google Search. This is because Google says its search engine and AI features are now closely connected. Why is Google introducing this change? The decision comes after growing concerns about the use of AI in classrooms. Teachers and parents have raised questions about students depending too much on AI tools for homework and assignments. While AI can help students understand difficult topics, it can also make it easier to get ready-made answers without learning the subject properly. Experts are also concerned about its possible impact on children’s critical thinking and learning habits. Google says it wants schools to have more control over how AI is used in classrooms. The company is also introducing new learning features to make its tools more useful for education. Google Search will offer step-by-step learning support
Along with these changes, Google is updating its search experience to make it more helpful for students. Its new Guided Learning feature is designed to help students understand problems instead of simply giving them answers. For example, if a student searches for a difficult physics question or needs help with a school assignment, the tool can guide them through the solution step by step. The idea is to encourage students to understand concepts, think critically, and learn how to solve problems on their own. Google is also bringing Guided Learning to Google Classroom, where teachers can use class materials to support students and understand which topics they may be struggling with. How could this decision affect Indian students and schools? Although Google’s latest announcement mainly focuses on K-12 schools in the US, it is relevant to Indian schools as well. Many educational institutions in India use Google services such as Google Classroom, Google Search, Docs, and Chromebooks for teaching and learning. Here are some possible effects if similar restrictions are introduced for Indian school accounts: 1. Schools may have to rethink their AI policies: Indian schools that want to restrict students’ use of AI may need to review how they use Google’s education tools if the same policy is extended to them. 2. Students could face changes in how they search: If the restrictions are introduced in India, students using school-managed accounts may need to use AI-enabled Search or find alternative search services, depending on their school’s settings. 3. Teachers may need to change teaching methods: Teachers may have to find new ways to guide students through assignments and encourage independent research instead of relying entirely on AI-generated answers. 4. More focus on responsible AI use: The move could encourage Indian schools to create clear rules about when students can use AI for learning, homework, and research. Why are educators criticising Google’s decision?
The announcement has received criticism from educators and child safety advocates. Some believe Google is putting schools in a difficult position by linking access to its popular search engine with the use of AI. Former Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan criticised the move, arguing that Google was using its strong position in the search market to push schools towards adopting AI. Children’s rights advocates have also raised concerns that AI tools could affect students’ ability to think independently and learn through their own efforts.

Why is Search AI trending on Google? Google Search AI is trending as the company plans to link students’ access to its search engine with their school’s AI policy. Schools that opt out of AI tools may also lose access to Google Search. The move has sparked debate over whether students should lose access to a basic search service because their school decided on AI.
