AI calls to face restrictions without prior notice:2,300 crore spam calls detected in 3 months; TRAI to bring new rules

Companies making robotic or AI calls, ranging from banking services to service updates, will now have to provide information about such calls to telecom operators. Why was there a need to introduce this rule? With AI voice agents, it has become difficult to distinguish between calls from genuine companies and those made by fraudsters. In the April-June quarter this year, AI systems identified 2,300 crore calls as spam. This decision has been taken to prevent fraud and protect customers. How will fake calls be identified?
The network will identify suspicious behaviour based on company declarations, number series, and calling patterns. Numbers making an unusually high number of calls or unknown numbers will be flagged immediately. Smartphone features such as Truecaller and Google Pixel will also detect AI voices and scam patterns in real time. What is the difference between service and promotional calls? Promotional calls will come from the 140 series, while the 1600 series has been designated for banks and financial transactions. Now, the 1601 series has been allocated for service calls from non-banking sectors such as electricity, courier, and logistics. This will make it easier for customers to identify fake and important calls and help them stay safe from potential fraud. What are the rules for AI calls in other countries? The US has included AI voice calls under automated calling rules, making customer consent mandatory. Under the European Union’s AI Act, disclosure of AI voice calls became mandatory from August 2, 2026. The UK is also taking strict measures to block fake international numbers.
