Apple has finally brought touchscreen technology to the MacBook Pro, changing how users can interact with its professional laptops. The new models let users tap, swipe, zoom, and draw directly on the screen while keeping the familiar keyboard and trackpad. Announced at Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event, the new MacBook Pro lineup features an advanced OLED display, upgraded processors, and improvements to battery life, sound, and connectivity. The laptops are designed for professionals in video editing, graphic design, software development, and artificial intelligence (AI). The new MacBook Pro models are scheduled to go on sale from November 9. Apple MacBook Pro price in India
Apple has announced four configurations of the new MacBook Pro, with prices varying according to screen size and processor. Apple has also listed discounted education prices for eligible buyers. The 14-inch M5 Pro model starts at Rs 3,31,900, while the 16-inch version starts at ₹3,85,900. The education prices for the 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Max models start at ₹5,12,900 and ₹5,52,900, respectively. Apple MacBook Pro: What’s new? 1. Touchscreen arrives on the MacBook Pro
The biggest change is the addition of a touchscreen. Users can scroll through webpages, zoom into photographs, move presentation slides and interact with supported apps using their fingers. The feature could be particularly useful for people working with creative software. Designers can draw directly on the display, musicians can interact with digital instruments, and professionals can make changes to their projects without relying entirely on the trackpad. However, the touchscreen is an additional way to interact with the laptop, not a replacement for the keyboard or trackpad. The company has also integrated the touch sensor into the display and redesigned the hinge to provide greater stability when users tap the screen. 2. New OLED display with brighter visuals The new MacBook Pro features a tandem OLED display with up to 2,000 nits of HDR brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces for accurate visuals, while an optional nano-texture finish helps reduce glare. 3. Dynamic Island comes to Mac Another notable addition is Dynamic Island, a feature previously associated with the iPhone. On the MacBook Pro, it provides quick access to information and controls, including Spotlight search, music playback, and Live Activities. 4. M5 Pro and M5 Max chips promise faster performance The new MacBook Pro models run on Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designed for tasks ranging from software development and video editing to 3D animation and AI development. Both feature Neural Accelerators for faster AI processing, while the laptops support up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. Apple also claims up to twice the storage speed. 5. Battery life, sound and connectivity improvements Apple claims the new MacBook Pro can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life. The company also says the laptop can charge to 50 per cent in around 30 minutes under supported charging conditions. Other upgrades include a redesigned cooling system, a six-speaker audio setup, studio-quality microphones and a 12-megapixel Centre Stage camera. The new models are also lighter than their predecessors, with the 14-inch version weighing around 1.36kg and the 16-inch version approximately 1.81kg. Why is Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro launch significant? Apple has resisted adding touchscreens to its Mac laptops for years. In 2010, company co-founder Steve Jobs described touchscreen laptops as “ergonomically terrible”. In 2012, former Apple CEO Tim Cook also questioned the idea of combining tablets and laptops, comparing it to merging a toaster and a refrigerator. Apple later introduced the Touch Bar, a touch-sensitive strip above the keyboard, on MacBook Pro models in 2016. However, the company brought back physical function keys with its 2021 redesign and discontinued the Touch Bar in 2023. The new MacBook Pro marks a major shift in this approach. Instead of relying only on the keyboard and trackpad, users can now interact directly with the main display. The change also brings Apple’s laptops closer to the touchscreen experience already available on many Windows laptops. However, the MacBook Pro’s premium pricing means it will primarily appeal to professionals and buyers who need its advanced performance and display features. What does this mean for the laptop market? Apple’s entry into the touchscreen laptop segment could encourage more discussion around how people use laptops for work and creative tasks. It may also push manufacturers to focus more on display quality, battery life, stylus support and AI features. According to IDC, vendors shipped 33.4 million touchscreen notebooks in 2025, a 22 per cent increase from the previous year. These devices accounted for 16 per cent of all notebook shipments. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of worldwide devices at IDC, said Apple’s entry was unlikely to have a major immediate impact on other PC makers, whose touchscreen laptops often target enterprise and education customers at lower prices. However, he noted that Apple’s decision could change the conversation around touch-enabled laptops.
