Government-owned telecom company BSNL has launched a satellite phone in India, priced at ₹1,34,166 (including taxes). Unlike a regular smartphone that relies on a SIM card and mobile network, this phone connects directly to satellites for communication. Its biggest advantage is uninterrupted voice calling, even in areas with no mobile network coverage or in off-grid locations, where conventional phones fail to work. However, purchasing a satellite phone requires prior government approval.

This will make it easier to maintain contact with people in disaster or emergency situations. The company stated that this handset has been developed in partnership with global satellite network provider ‘Inmarsat’. Before purchasing or using this phone, the user will be required to obtain approval or authorization from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Possessing or operating a satellite phone without government approval can lead to legal action under Indian rules. This BSNL satellite phone is not for everyday smartphone users.
