Virat Kohli has opened up about his abrupt retirement from Test cricket, a decision that left many fans disappointed. Kohli announced his retirement through social media after a celebrated red-ball career spanning more than 12 years.

Kohli’s retirement was surrounded by speculation, with several reports claiming there were differences with the team management and other external factors influencing his decision.

Speaking on a Royal Challengers Bengaluru podcast, Kohli suggested that he was not entirely satisfied with how things unfolded after India’s tour of Australia and indicated that he did not want to continue in an environment where he felt the need to constantly prove himself.

“My perspective is very clear — if I feel I can add value to the environment I’m part of, and the environment feels it too, then I’ll be there. But if I’m made to feel that I have to prove my worth and value, I’m not in that space anymore,” Kohli said.

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

The former India captain ended his Test career with 9,230 runs and 30 centuries in 123 matches, establishing himself as one of India’s greatest batters in the format.

Kohli eager to play 2027 ODI World Cup

Kohli also dropped a strong hint about continuing in ODI cricket, saying he would “love” to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

The Indian batting star has already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, leading to speculation over the future of his ODI career.

During the RCB podcast, Kohli said he remains highly motivated to continue representing India in the 50-over format. Kohli had a stellar 2023 ODI World Cup, where he was the top scorer and won the player of the tournament award.

“This 27 chat, for me, it’s like, we are mid-26 now. I have been asked so many times — do you want to play 27? Why would I leave my home, get the stuff over? Of course, if I am playing, I want to play cricket. I want to carry on, playing for India in the World Cup is amazing,” Kohli said.
