Virat Kohli dropped a hint regarding his ODI future as he revealed he would `love` to play at the ODI World Cup in South Africa. The Indian star has announced his retirement from T20I and Test cricket, putting his ODI future into doubt.
In a podcast with RCB, Kohli opened up about his immediate goals and his future in the 50-over format. The former Indian skipper admitted that he wants to carry on playing for India and was looking forward to next year`s showpiece event.
“This 27 chat, for me it`s like, we are mid 26 now, I have been asked so many times – do you want to play 27, Why would I leave my home, get the stuff over – of course, if I am playing, I want to play cricket – I want to carry on, playing for India in the World Cup is amazing”. Virat Kohli said in an RCB podcast.
Kohli retired from T20I after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. The Indian star later announced his retirement from Test cricket as well after India toured Australia in 2025. However, it looks unlikely that Kohli will hang up his boots in the ODI format anytime soon.
Kohli was the highest run scorer at the 2023 ODI World Cup
Virat Kohli was the star of the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Kohli finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, amassing a staggering 765 runs in 11 innings at an incredible average of 95.62. This incredible feat broke Sachin Tendulkar’s 20-year-old record (673 runs in 2003) for the most runs scored in a single edition of a World Cup.
His best moment of the tournament came in the semi-final against New Zealand. Kohli smashed a record-breaking 50th ODI century, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar`s tally of 49 in front of a packed Wankhede crowd.
Throughout the campaign, he smashed three hundreds and six half-centuries, earning him the well-deserved Player of the Tournament award. While India unfortunately fell short in the final against Australia, Kohli’s 2023 World Cup campaign cemented his legacy as the greatest ODI batsman of the modern era.
