FIFA WC 2026: Eriksen collapses again during Denmark vs Ukraine friendly match

In Sunday`s international friendly match against Ukraine in Odense, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch yet again. The last time he collapsed on the pitch was five years ago at the Euro 2021.

In the recent incident, he went down in the 65th minute. The 34-year-old footballer received prompt medical assistance, and he was later able to walk to the ambulance on his own.

Following the incident, the Danish Football Federation shared a post on its official social media handle, providing an update on Eriksen. The international friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine was also called off after the footballer collapsed on the field.

“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off,” read the post`s caption.

This was the second time that he collapsed on the field while representing his country. The collapse sparked concern among players and supporters, with memories resurfacing of Eriksen`s medical emergency during Denmark`s UEFA European Championship match against Finland in 2021.

Back then, he suffered a cardiac arrest on the turf, following which he received a life-saving CPR treatment. Later, he was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD).

Later, despite suffering a heart attack, Eriksen made a successful comeback to professional football and continued to represent his country and club.

Further updates on Eriksen`s condition are awaited from the Danish Football Federation and medical staff.

Meanwhile, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, marking the first time three countries have co-hosted the competition. It will also be the inaugural World Cup to feature an expanded field of 48 teams.

The first match of the marquee event is scheduled to be played between Mexico and South Africa on June 12 at the Mexico City Stadium in Coyoacán.

The title clash will be played on July 20 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
