Geomagnetic solar storm to hit Earth today:G2-level expected after weaker G1 storm; should people on Earth be worried?
The Sun is sending a fresh wave of activity toward Earth, and space-weather forecasters are watching it closely. A G2-level geomagnetic storm is expected today after a weaker G1 storm was forecast for August 27. The stronger storm is linked to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that erupted from the Sun on August 25. These huge clouds of charged particles are travelling through space and could disturb Earth’s magnetic field when they arrive. What is causing today’s geomagnetic storm? The main reason for today’s storm is a group of CMEs released by the Sun. CMEs are giant clouds of electrically charged particles and magnetic fields thrown into space during solar eruptions. When they reach Earth, they can interact with our planet’s magnetic field and trigger a geomagnetic storm. The expected storm has been rated G2, or moderate, which means it could cause stronger effects than the G1 activity expected a day earlier. Auroras could become visible farther from the poles One of the most exciting effects could be the appearance of auroras. Normally, the colourful northern lights are mostly seen near the Arctic regions. But during stronger geomagnetic storms, auroras can spread farther south and become visible from areas that do not usually see them. If the storm reaches the expected strength, skywatchers in some lower-latitude regions could get a chance to see the phenomenon. However, seeing an aurora is not guaranteed. It depends on how strong the storm actually becomes, the location of the observer, weather conditions, and how dark the sky is. Should people on Earth be worried? There is no need for the public to panic. These solar storms do not pose a direct danger to people on the ground. However, a strong geomagnetic storm can sometimes affect satellites, GPS signals, radio communication, and power systems. Space agencies and operators therefore keep a close watch on such events. Why August 28 could be interesting for skywatchers The unusual part of this event is that Earth has been facing more than one source of geomagnetic activity over two days. The first storm was linked to a fast stream of solar wind coming from a coronal hole on the Sun. Today’s potentially stronger event is linked to CMEs. With the CME-driven storm expected to be stronger, August 28 could offer the better opportunity for aurora watchers. But the final intensity of the storm can change as the solar material gets closer to Earth, so skywatchers will need to keep an eye on the latest space-weather updates.
