Indian Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill celebrates his 27th birthday on Tuesday, reaching another milestone in a journey that has seen him transition from a young talent into India’s Test and ODI captain.

Gill first established himself as a household name after winning Player of the Tournament during India’s triumph at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.

The opening batter remains the fastest player in ODI history to cross both the 2,000 and 2,500-run milestones. He is also the youngest cricketer to smash a double century in 50-over international cricket.

Gill made his ODI debut back in 2019, but his true breakout occurred during the memorable 2020-21 Test series in Australia. After registering scores of 45 and 35 on debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, he struck a half-century in Sydney and played a match-winning 91 in India’s famous series-clinching chase at the Gabba.

Gill’s journey towards Indian Test and ODI captaincy

Shubman Gill’s maiden Test century arrived in Chattogram the following year. Just a month later at age 23, he smashed 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. He went on to score over 350 runs in India’s run to the 2023 World Cup final and won the 2025 Champions Trophy with the senior team. Gill also starred in the 4-1 Test series win against England in 2024, hitting tons in Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala alongside clutch half-centuries in Rajkot and Ranchi.

In the IPL, Gill assumed the captaincy of Gujarat Titans in 2024 following Hardik Pandya’s exit, leading the side to the playoffs in 2025 while scoring 650 runs. He followed that up with a massive 732-run season in 2026, finishing as the league’s second-highest run-scorer behind teenage star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, Gill was appointed Test captain for the 2025 tour of England. He responded with a historic campaign, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40 with four centuries, including a personal best of 269, to secure a 2-2 draw. It marked the second-highest tally ever by a captain in a Test series, trailing only Don Bradman’s 810 runs during the 1936-37 Ashes.

Across his career, Gill has scored 3,043 runs in 43 Tests at 43.47, with 11 centuries. His ODI record features 3,379 runs in 67 matches at an average of 60.33, while his T20I record includes 869 runs in 36 games at a 138.59 strike rate.
