'The batting unit needs to show more responsibility…': Gavaskar on Team India

In the fourth T20I match against the West Indies, Team India suffered a loss by 24 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.
Following the loss, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that the current Indian team needs to improve the way they chase a target. He also added that Team India’s dominance with the willow was completely missing.
“The first thing this Indian side needs to improve is how they chase. The batting unit needs to show more responsibility. If the batters don’t take responsibility, this Indian side will not succeed,” he said.
“On a pitch like this, with the dew coming in, you have to show the kind of dominance with the bat that a back-to-back T20 World Cup winning team should, but that was missing completely in this game,” added Gavaskar.
He then spoke about Team India’s batsmen by saying that except for wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, no other player capitalised at all. Samson smashed 56 runs in 23 balls, including six boundaries and four maximums.
“Sanju gave India a great start, but the rest of the batters didn’t capitalise at all. Abhishek Sharma played a poor knock, which is not acceptable by his standards. Ishan Kishan fell right into Keemo Paul’s trap, and Shreyas Iyer has not got going since his hundred,” said the 77-year-old former cricketer.
However, he did not blame the bowlers for conceding a big total.
“Yes, I know the bowling has been poor, but these bowlers are not experienced. They are new to international cricket, and they will need to get hit for boundaries, otherwise they will not learn,” said Gavaskar.
IND vs WI 5th T20I: Date and venue
The victory has also helped the West Indies tie the five-match T20I series at 2-2, with one match yet to be played. The fifth T20I match between the Caribbean team and the “Men in Blue” is scheduled to be played on October 17 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The fifth clash promises to be a thriller, considering that both teams will look to end the series on a positive note.
