France probes secret filming of women using Meta smart glasses:Videos posted online without consent; 70 lakh pairs sold last year

France has launched investigations into cases involving women allegedly being filmed without their consent using camera-equipped smart glasses. In some cases, videos recorded on the streets were reportedly uploaded online, prompting complaints related to sexual harassment. The glasses come with a small built-in camera that allows users to record videos without taking out a smartphone. Their discreet design has raised concerns over their potential misuse and the violation of people’s privacy. Meta’s smart glasses among the most popular Meta’s smart glasses are among the most widely used camera-equipped glasses. They were developed by Meta in partnership with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica. Around 7 million pairs were reportedly sold last year. Human rights organisations have raised concerns that women are being disproportionately targeted when the technology is misused. Ines Girard, who works in the women’s rights sector, said the responsibility should not be placed on people being recorded by simply telling them to be more cautious.
