India’s biggest semiconductor plant starts trial run in Assam:Jagiroad unit to make 4.8 crore chips a day, to create 40,000 jobs
The Tata Group’s semiconductor plant being built in Jagiroad, Morigaon, Assam, will be the country’s largest semiconductor plant. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to have the capacity to produce around 4.8 crore semiconductor chips a day. Trial runs have already begun at the plant, which is spread across around 592 acres. Advanced semiconductor packaging technologies such as wire bonding, flip-chip and fan-out will be used here. The chips will meet the needs of sectors including automotive, healthcare, telecommunications and consumer electronics. According to the electronics company building the plant, it has the potential to create 27,000 to 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Prime Minister Modi may officially inaugurate the plant in December this year or January 2027. After the semiconductor fab, this will be the world’s largest semiconductor assembly and test facility. Measures to protect against vibration and pollution Wild elephant herds roam the area where this plant has been built. Semiconductor production requires precision at the nanometre level. The heavy footsteps of elephants can create enough vibration to disrupt chip assembly machines. To protect against this, a green belt and a sturdy ‘elephant-proof’ wall made of roadside concrete and steel have been built around the plant. In addition to a snake rescue team, workers have also been trained to protect against snakes.
Assam’s youth are leaving overseas jobs to attend interviews Assamese youths working in other countries are taking a keen interest in the semiconductor plant being set up in Assam. Several highly skilled young professionals have decided to leave their jobs abroad and return to Assam. Many have already been interviewed.
