Google sent alerts to people before Venezuela earthquake struck:Can your Android phone save you? Here’s what really happened
Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. The back-to-back tremors caused severe damage, with several buildings collapsing. Reports say these were the strongest earthquakes to strike the country in nearly a century. But what caught many people by surprise wasn’t just the earthquake, it was the warning. Several Android users in Venezuela received a Google alert seconds before they felt the ground shake. The notification even showed the estimated magnitude of the earthquake and how far away it was, giving people a short but valuable chance to move to safety. The secret is inside your Android phone Every modern Android smartphone comes with a sensor called an accelerometer. While it’s mainly known for rotating your screen when you turn your phone, it can also detect tiny ground movements. When an Android phone senses vibrations that look like an earthquake, it anonymously sends the information and its approximate location to Google’s servers. One phone alone isn’t enough to confirm an earthquake. However, when many nearby Android devices report the same kind of movement at almost the same time, Google’s system recognizes that an earthquake is likely happening. It then quickly sends alerts to people in nearby areas. With more than 2 billion Android devices worldwide, Google says it has built the world’s largest earthquake detection network. How this work? Since mobile and internet networks transmit data almost instantly, Google’s system can analyze the reports and send warnings before the slower, more destructive S-waves arrive. Google describes this as “racing the speed of light against the speed of an earthquake.” In Venezuela, some users shared screenshots showing alerts arriving moments before they experienced the shaking. One notification said an earthquake had been detected about 341 kilometres away, giving users a few precious seconds to prepare. Even such a short warning can help people move away from dangerous objects, stop their vehicles safely, or take cover. Two types of earthquake alerts Google sends two kinds of earthquake notifications: Tapping the alert also shows safety tips, the estimated magnitude, the epicentre’s location, and a map of the affected area. Is this feature available in India? Yes. Google rolled out the Android Earthquake Alerts System in India in 2023 for phones running Android 5.0 or later. To receive alerts, users need to keep Location Services turned on and have either mobile data or Wi-Fi enabled. Nowadays smartphones do much more than make calls or send messages. In emergencies like earthquakes, they can also provide life-saving warnings giving people valuable extra seconds before disaster strikes.
